Parshas Pekudai (2)

These are the accountings of the Mishkan, Mishkan of Testimony that were counted by Moshe. ( Shemos 38/21)

Rashi explains:

” the Mishkan, Mishkan of Testimony”-the word Mishkan” is written twice, one after the other, to allude to the fact that Hashem took the Bais HaMikdash twice as collateral that we will do teshuva for our sins.

“Mishkan of Testimony”. The Mishkan is is a proof that Hashem overlooked the sin of worshipping the Golden Calf and rested the shechinah between them.

Zera Shimshon asks in the name of the meforshim that these two passages of Rashi seem to contradict each other.

In the first passage, Rashi explains that Hashem destroyed the Bais HaMikdash twice because of our sins (which also includes the worshipping of the Golden Calf (Rashi above Shemos 32/34).

In the second passage he writes that the Mishkan is proof Hashem overlooked the sin of Golden Calf, which implies that we are no longer responsible for that sin! If we are not accountable for that sin why did Hashem take the Bais HaMikdash as collateral?

He answers in light of a principle found in the Gemorro Avodah Zara that Bnei Yisroel worshipped the Golden Calf in order to teach to future generations that Hashem accepts the teshuva of a whole community and not only of an individual that sins.
Perkai D’Rebbi Eliezer adds that this was not always the case. Communal teshuva was not built into the creation of the world. Rather, after the incident of the Golden Calf there was a Moment of Extreme Love for Bnei Yisroel (Ais Ratzon) and Moshe davvened that Hashem will accept their teshuva

We can now understand how the two passages of Rashi do not contradict each other.

The Mishkan is a proof that Hashem overlooked our sin of worshipping the Golden Calf in as much that H. didn’t immediately decree our annihilation. H. gave us time to do teshuva.

However Hashem forgives us only when we actually do teshuva. Therefore Hashem took the Bais HaMikdash in order to insure that we will do teshuva.
